To combat loss of collagen and elastin, ThermiAesthetics has introduced ThermiRF, a temperature controlled Radio Frequency (RF) device aimed at tightening areas that have begun to lose volume and elasticity. ThermiRF uses the “Science of Heat” to treat a variety of aesthetic soft tissue and nerve conditions and has shown great success in tightening skin in the chin, cheeks, jowl, neck, arms, tummy, and knees. If you have mild skin laxity in these areas but are not a candidate for surgery, ThermiRF may be a good choice for you. Dr. Humble offers two distinct applications of the ThermiRF technology – ThermiTight and ThermiSmooth.

ThermiTight

With ThermiTight (one of the therapies offered in our Los Angeles practice using the ThermiRF device), we can tighten the skin on various parts of the bodies (under the chin, neck, knees, arms, tummy) by heating the tissues under the skin. Unlike other technologies, ThermiTight uses injectable RF to generate controlled heat in deeper layers of the skin. The heat causes collagen contraction, and over time, new collagen deposition. It sort of shrink wraps the tissue, from the inside.

Here’s how it works. After applying a small volume of local anesthetic, a tiny thermistor probe (self-regulating heating element) is inserted under the skin. Dr. Humble applies gentle movements to heat up the tissues to the desired level. The video below shows this process.

After the procedure, a gentle wrap is applied and the patient may resume normal activities the next day. Results can last upwards of 2 years. ThermiRF is an exciting new option for those who aren’t candidates for plastic surgery, but want more than they are getting from injectables. It is especially exciting as one of the few options to treat arms and knees, other than surgery.

ThermiSmooth

ThermiSmooth uses ThermiRF technology, but is performed using a specially designed hand piece which delivers precise heating to the area being treated.

Studies show that collagen under the skin will shrink when heat is applied. The ThermiSmooth hand piece delivers heat in a precise and controlled manner which is monitored by the physician. Heating the collagen under the skin begins a process where the skin begins to tighten, and new collagen can be produced over time.

How Does It Work?

After applying a small amount of gel to the area, the ThermiSmooth hand piece is gently moved in a circular motion, gradually heating up the skins surface. The ThermiRF computer automatically adjusts the temperature to ensure accurate heating of the area. The physician spends about 5 minutes on small “zones” within the treatment area. Treatments are usually repeated several times to achieve the desired results.

ThermiSmooth works well on many areas of the face, and is especially suited for under the eyes, around the mouth, the forehead, eyelids, and neck. While patients may require several treatments, most patients will see some results after the first treatment. Full results will be noticeable over the following three to six months.
